Fun fact about me: I’m the y0ungest of 18 children (true story)…I’ll just leave this right here.
Writing about health-related topics feels second nature to me. I, like many, have been surrounded by health issues suffered by friends and loved ones since I was very young. A little while after my mother fell into a coma (when I was 12 years old) I decided to become a nurse to better understand the human condition and be able to help others and explain health-related issues to family and friends. I enjoy making things relatable and easy to understand by explaining them in different ways depending on who I’m talking to.
As a registered nurse since 2008 (has it really been that long already?) I have seen, heard, read, researched, studied and done a lot of things in the health field. I have taken care of patients and their families in the hospital and I have taken care of my own family both in and outside of the hospital. I’ve been on both sides of the stethoscope, so to speak. I love explaining and teaching anything that I know to whomever is interested in learning. It has always been a part of me, health-related, or not.
Service has also been a part of me for as long as I can remember. During high school I was a home health aid. Straight out of high school I joined the Army and served on active duty as a psychological operations specialist (intrigued?). After that, I was a volunteer firefighter before and during college. And then I became a registered nurse. My wife is a nurse. One of my brothers (yes, only one of my 17 siblings) is a flight nurse. His wife is also a flight nurse. My mother-in-law is a retired nurse. We have friends who are nurses, nurse practitioners, nursing assistants, physicians, surgeons, etc. I’m surrounded by people who have dedicated their lives to saving and improving the lives of others. We all educate one another and those around us in various ways.
Did I mention that I’m also a licensed massage therapist as of December 2020? Going through massage therapy school during the COVID-19 pandemic was…interesting, challenging and yet, still very effective. Yes, we did have in-person classes most of the time, even during the height of the pandemic. We couldn’t just practice techniques on ourselves now could we? I operate my own private medical massage practice. I see this as another form of service as I help others with pain, discomfort and other issues. Education is also a significant part of my practice.
Health is all around us, every day. Almost everyone can relate to health issues in some way, shape or form. I want to help reach and educate more than just my family, friends and those geographically close to me. Together we can reach people where they are, on their level and show them who they can trust and seek out to find the information they need, when they need it.
Post Script: Other fun hobbies of mine are woodworking, photography, running (yes, for fun), annoying/embarrassing my children and doing all of the things my wife voluntells me to do.
